WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University Department of Athletics is happy to report another banner semester in the classroom for WLU's student-athletes.
The 400-plus student-athletes on the Hilltopper campus posted a combined 3.19 grade-point average for the spring semester across all 20 intercollegiate teams. It marks the 10th consecutive semester that West Liberty's student-athletes have achieved a combined GPA of 3.00 or higher.
"I congratulate our student-athletes, our coaches and our faculty for continuing to work together to produce these outstanding results year after year," athletic director Lynn Ullom said. "We take pride in playing for championships at West Liberty and it's great to see our student-athletes carry that winning attitude into the classroom."
It was an across the board success story this spring as 18 of the 20 sports rosters chalked up combined GPAs of 3.00 or higher with three of them – women's tennis (3.95), women's cross country (3.85) and women's volleyball (3.80) – knocking it out of the park with combined team GPAs of 3.80 or better.
Individually, a total of 91 student-athletes checked in with perfect 4.00 GPAs for the semester while 289 came in at 3.00 or higher. Nineteen of the 20 teams had at least one student-athlete post a 4.00 GPA for the semester.
The women's track and field team took top honors in the 4.00 GPA listing with 11 perfect GPAs with women's soccer and softball also cracking double figures with 10. Track and football paced the men's teams with 8 and 7, respectively.
Every member of the women's volleyball, women's tennis and women's cross country teams finished the semester with a GPA of 3.00 or higher. Wrestling and football tied for the overall lead with 27 each, just ahead of baseball (26), softball (25), women's track (24), women's soccer (23) and acrobatics & tumbling (22).
