WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Although high winds and severe storms forced the cancellation of West Liberty's Tim Weaver Invitational Track Meet early Saturday afternoon, several events were completed before the cancellation and two more school records were eclipsed.
Reese Burnside not only set a school record in the pole vault, the reigning Mountain East Conference indoor champion became the first MEC pole vaulter to clear 16 feet with a winning vault of 16 feet, 2.75 inches (4.95 meters).
Burnside's vault easily eclipsed the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark of 15 feet, 9.75 inches (4.82 meters) and would have been the top mark in the Atlantic Region last spring.
On the women's side, Olivia Combs broke her own school record in winning the pole vault. Her vault of 11 feet, 7.75 inches (3.55m) is the best in the MEC thus far this spring and two inches better than her previous standard of 11 feet, 5.75 inches, set just two weeks ago.
The West Liberty men and women return to action on Thursday when they head to New Concord, Ohio for the first day of the Muskie Easter Meet, hosted by Muskingum University.
