INDIANAPOLIS – The West Liberty University men's and women's tennis teams were each included in the second set of NCAA Division II Atlantic Region rankings released earlier this week by the NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Tennis Committees.
This week's rankings were the first to provide actual numerical rankings from the committee after last week's initial rankings only listed the teams in alphabetical order.
Coach Heather Gallagher's Hilltopper women, who have already clinched a second-place finish in the Mountain East Conference, checked in at No. 4 among the Atlantic Region women's teams this week. West Liberty is one of four MEC women's teams listed in the region's top seven. Nationally-ranked Charleston is No. 1 with West Virginia State fifth and Fairmont State holding down the seventh spot.
Ronnie Hulewicz's WLU men's team is sixth in this week's Atlantic Region men's rankings, which also feature a strong MEC flavor. Charleston is No. 1 on the men's side with Fairmont State and West Virginia Wesleyan checking in at Nos. 3 and 4, respectively.
The regional rankings are used to select the participants for the NCAA Tournament. The Atlantic Region includes teams from the MEC, PSAC and CIAA. The three conference tournament champions receive automatic bids.
The 2023 MEC Tournament will be held April 22-23 at the Schoenbaum Courts in Charleston, W.Va.
