Claysville, Pa. – The West Liberty University men's tennis team fell to Fairmont State, 5-0, on Saturday afternoon at McGuffey High School in Mountain East Conference action.
Fairmont State secured the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. The Hilltoppers' top pair of Pablo Zubieta and Ethan Shepard battled in a 6-4 decision, while the duo of Ignacio Giurfa and Austin Zgurski dropped a 6-0 result. The third doubles match featuring Chris Burns and Barney Cowan was unfinished.
In singles play, the Falcons carried their momentum, claiming victories in the first four completed matches to seal the team win.
Zubieta competed at No. 1 singles, falling 6-4, 6-0, while Giurfa dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision at No. 2. Shepard battled at No. 3, winning four games in the second set before falling 6-1, 6-4. Zgurski rounded out the completed matches at No. 4, coming up short 6-0, 6-1.
The No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches, featuring Cowan and Burns, respectively, were not played as the match was decided.
