HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's indoor track and field team sits in second place heading into day two of the Mountain East Conference Championships at Marshall University. The Hilltoppers scored 61 points through six scored events on Friday and trail Charleston by nine points.
On her second shot put of the day,
Kennedy Martin broke the program record, set by national qualifier
Kelsi Hulit last season, with a 12.45m throw earning the top spot on the podium. Martin captured 10 team points while inking her name in both the conference and school record books.
Kaylee Savage (10.96m) and
Sydney Jefferys (10.84m) finished seventh and eighth, respectively, with season-best marks earning a total of three team points.
Olivia Combs highlighted the pole vaulters with another school record, improving her own mark to 3.48m. After clearing the first three marks with ease on her first attempts, Combs battled back from two fouls and went over the new school record (3.48m) on her third try tying for the top of the leaderboard, but was ultimately awarded second after the tiebreaker for eight team points.
Mackenzie Rine got over 3.08m finishing in fourth place (five team points) and
Olivia Miller captured one point in eighth place officially after tying for sixth with a 2.78m clear.
Freshman
Sierra Lanham set a new school record and finished second in her first-ever MEC Championships, leaping 5.52m in the long jump. The record-setting mark came on her second-to-last try and earned her eight team points. Combs, fresh off a school record in the pole vault, placed fifth with a 5.16m jump obtaining four team points.
Maggie Kovalcik (5.04m),
Tori Fisher (4.93m), and
Lauren Wyatt (4.78m) finished 6,7,8 on the leaderboard picking up a total of six team points, as all five Hilltoppers in the event recorded scores for towards the team total.
Hannah Kemp ran to a third-place finish in the 5000m race with an 18:14.39 picking up six points for the Black and Gold. The top two runners from Charleston both hit NCAA provisional marks.
Zayne Brakeall started and stayed in fourth place throughout the day competing in the pentathlon. Brakeall posted a 9.76 in the 60m hurdles and 2:41.05 in the 800m race, while jumping 4.61m in the long jump, clearing 1.43m in the high jump, and throwing 9.31m in the shot put.
Tori Fisher finished seventh and
Ivy Allen 10th in the event. Brakeall totaled a 2,803 in the pentathlon, breaking their own school record.
The distance medley team of
Savannah Moorehead,
Blake Hull,
Ally Hicks, and
Bailey Pack earned three points finishing in sixth place with a time of 13:55.55.
West Virginia Wesleyan (28), Wheeling (21), and Frostburg State (20) round out the top-five heading into what is sure to be an action-packed Saturday.
