BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The West Liberty University men's tennis team competed at the ITA Atlantic Regional Championships this weekend. Three players battled in the singles bracket and one doubles team represented the Hilltoppers.
Gianluca Gerndt picked up an opening round win to advance in the singles bracket for WLU. He downed his opponent in two identical 6-2 sets to earn the chance to play Saturday. Gerndt started day two with a hard-fought 6-4, 7-5 win over a Frostburg State player to move into the round of 16 where he lost in straight sets to Charleston.
Derek Roehner dropped his opening singles match in straight sets to a Bloomsburg representative.
Nevio Dux lost his first matchup in singles via a tiebreak set against an Edinboro challenger. Dux won the first set 6-2 then got the score flipped in set two before being edged out 10-8 in the tiebreak.
Gerndt and Dux were the only duo in the doubles bracket for West Liberty. They lost the opening round 6-1 to their combatants from Charleston.
West Liberty returns to team action next week with a Friday match at Washington and Jefferson. First serve from Washington, Pa. is slated for 3 pm.
