BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The West Liberty University women's tennis team began its weekend at the ITA Atlantic Region Championships today.
Emma Arnal and
Gemma Cliffe highlighted the doubles portion by securing a spot in tomorrow's quarterfinals. The Hilltoppers also had three players advance in singles play, including Arnal, Cliffe, and
Evelina Martirosyan.
Arnal/Cliffe steamrolled both their opponents today by identical scores of 6-1. In the round of 32 they took down a duo from Mercyhurst, then handled a Bluefield State doubles team that won their first match 6-1, in the round of 16.
Martirosyan and
Nathalia Valencia also teamed up for West Liberty in the doubles field. They earned a 6-2 win in the opening round over Charleston opponents, but bowed out of the bracket in the round of 16 dropping a 6-2 decision to an Indiana University of Pa. duo.
Three of the four Hilltoppers competing in the singles bracket this weekend moved on. Martirosyan swung a 6-2, 6-4 win to advance, Cliffe downed her opening round opponent with consecutive 6-2 wins, and Arnal posted a 6-3, 6-1 victory to move on.
Valencia lost a hard-fought battle in tiebreak. After winning the first set 6-4, the Slippery Rock opponent forced a tiebreak with a 6-1 second set victory. The tiebreak went 10-6 in favor of SRU.
The quarterfinals for Arnal/Cliffe will take place first thing tomorrow morning at 9 am. They take on the top-ranked Charleston doubles team.
Singles play will continue tomorrow with the round of 32 and 16 beginning at 10 am.
