BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The West Liberty University men's tennis team began its 2022 season with an appearance at the Bloomsburg Invite over the weekend. After duking it out on Saturday, the teams were forced to call it a weekend before play could start again Sunday morning as severe weather entered the area.

The Hilltoppers fared well in the doubles portion of the invite, with a flight three victory and an appearance in the finals in flight one.

Derek Roehner and Alfonso Zerpa came out on top of the four-team doubles flight three bracket with two wins on Saturday. The Hilltopper squad downed Millersville 9-7 to start play and then topped St. Francis 8-6 to earn first place honors.

The Nevio Dux / Gianluca Gerndt duo earned a spot in the finals for doubles flight one before the disruption. They won 9-7 over Davis and Elkins in the opening round and then moved past St. Francis with an 8-3 win.

Dux won his first singles match of the day over a Millersville opponent, by scores of 4-5, 4-1, 10-7, in flight two. Dux dropped his second match in straight sets and was set to play for third place before the rainout.

Derek Roehner went 1-1 in singles filight four. He earned a 5-3, 2-4, 14-12 win in his second match of the day against a Mercyhurst opponent and was scheduled to play for fifth place before the cancelation.

West Liberty will head to Bloomsburg again this weekend for the Atlantic Region ITA Championships, held Friday through Monday.
