FAIRMONT, W.Va. - The West Liberty University women's team traveled to the Fairmont State Invitational this weekend to wrap up its fall competition schedule. The trip was highlighted by
Evelina Martirosyan, who won singles flight one, and the duo of
Daria Shchoma /
Gemma Cliffe, who teamed up to claim gold in doubles flight two.
Martirosyan started play on Saturday afternoon with a 4-0, 4-2 sweep of her Fairmont State opponent. Bright and early Sunday morning, the sophomore won a three-set match over a West Virginia State challenger. Martirosyan fell behind dropping set one 4-1, but bounced back with a 4-3 win in set two and claimed the tiebreak 10-6 to advance to the finals where her opponent withdrew.
The Shchoma/Cliffe squad rolled into the finals of the four-team flight with a 6-0 win in their opening match on Saturday. The duo battled out a 6-4 victory in the finals over West Virginia State opponents to eanr the flight title.
In other doubles action, Martirosyan and
Emma Arnal went 1-1 in flight one with a 6-2 win before suffering a 6-1 loss in the finals.
Jaqueline Pena-Aceves and
Nathalia Valencia entered the flight three bracket and also went 1-1 with a 6-2 opening match win and then got the score reveresed on them in the finals.
Katie Loader and
Elysia Beynon played in a round-robin flight four where they won their first (6-4) and lost their second (7-5).
Shchoma and Cliffe each dropped their first match of singles play in flight two. In flight three, Pena-Aceves bowed out in the semifinals after winning her quarterfinal match in a tiebreak, while Valencia lost a pair of tiebreak sets in her opening match. Beynon picked up a convincing 4-1, 4-0 win before a three-set loss knocked her out of flight four.
The event finished West Liberty's fall season. The Hilltoppers went 2-0 in team matches, both 7-0 victories, and also took part in three individual tournaments. WLU's full spring schedule will be announced later this winter.
