BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Several members of the West Liberty University men's tennis team turned in strong performances this past weekend in the 2021 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Atlantic Region championships, hosted by Bloomsburg University at the Burt Reese Tennis Center.
Returning All-MEC senior
Anton Schulz came up agonizingly short of earning a spot in the quarterfinals of the massive A Flight Championship Bracket draw. Schulz breezed to straight-set wins in his first two matches before dropping a three-set tiebreaker in the Round of 16.
Head coach Ronnie Hulewicz also saw
Derek Roehner advance to the Round of 16 in the B Flight singles while
Zarion Jones rebounded from a tiebreaker loss in the Round of 32 to win three straight Consolation Bracket matches on Sunday – all in straight sets.
Alfonso Zerpa also picked up a Consolation Bracket win following a similar tiebreaker loss in the Round of 32.
Jones and
Nevio Dux teamed up for a run to the quarterfinals of the B Flight Doubles Championship Bracket, breezing to a 6-2 victory in the Round of 16 before being eliminated by a 6-3 tally in the quarterfinals.
The WLU pairing of
Daisuke Aota and Isfan Makhumodov made it to the Round of 16 in the A Flight Doubles Championship Bracket only to be eliminated in a hard-fought tiebreaker.
The Hilltoppers will be idle until Oct. 9 when they head to Cedarville (Ohio) for a 1 p.m. match.
