BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The West Liberty University acrobatics & tumbling team remained unbeaten on the young season here Monday night with a 253.445-244.135 win against West Virginia Wesleyan inside Rockefeller Arena.
Coach
Kelsey Kyle's rising young Hilltoppers (2-0) broke school records in three of the first five heats of the evening and never surrendered the lead in handing the host Bobcats their second Mountain East Conference loss in as many outings.
Thanks to that fast start, West Liberty carried a three-point lead (36.30-33.30) out of the Compulsory Event after posting a school-record 9.30 in the Acro heat to go along with a WLU-best 8.25 in the challenging Tumbling heat.
The Hilltoppers opened the Acro Event with another program best, a 9.50 in the 5-Element heat, but Wesleyan popped 9-plus scores in all three heats for a narrow 27.80-27.10 win in the Acro Event. That trimmed the deficit to 63.40-61.10 as the teams prepared to close out the first half in the Pyramid Event.
The Pyramid is one of West Liberty's strongest events and while no records fell, the Hilltoppers hit 9.50 or better in all three heats to post a solid 28.85-27.80 victory in the event, extending their lead to 92.25-88.90 at intermission.
West Liberty eked out a 25.50-25.40 win in the Toss Event when action resumed but created a bit more breathing room with a convincing 49.525-45.425 victory in the Tumbling Event – highlighted by a school-record 8.10 in the Quad Pass heat – to take a solid 167.275-159.725 advantage into the final Team Event.
The Hilltoppers closed out the night with an 86.17-84.41 win in the Team Event to chalk up their first road victory of the season.
West Liberty heads back out on the road Saturday for another MEC test, a 7 p.m. match at Frostburg State.
