HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – While the bulk of Coach
Justin Simpson's West Liberty track and field athletes won't swing into action until Saturday, several Hilltoppers enjoyed record-setting days here Friday as the inaugural Mountain East Conference Indoor Championships kicked off its two-day run at Marshall University.
On the men's side, Phil White became the first WLU 5,000 meter runner to go under 15 minutes indoors. His time of 14:54.62 scrubbed more than 15 seconds off the previous school standard but was only good for sixth place in an MEC final featuring multiple All-Region runners.
Christian Oberdick also impressed in qualifying for Saturday's 60-meter hurdle final. Oberdick knocked more than two-tenths of a second off his year-old mark with a brisk 8.43 clocking and figures to be one of the top contenders on Saturday.
Another name to watch on Saturday is
Adam O'Donnell. An outdoors All-MEC honoree in the decathlon, O'Donnell won all four pentathlon events on Friday and appears to be running away from the field heading into Saturday's final three events.
West Liberty's distance medley relay team posted the Black and Gold's best finish of the day, placing second behind Concord.
Isaiah Robinson also hit the board with an eighth-place finish in the long jump.
The women also saw a pair of school records go by the boards with
Hailey Carreon breaking a 9-year-old record in qualifying for the 60 meter hurdles at 9.16 seconds while
Meghan Hawthorne added more than 100 points to her own school standard in the pentathlon.
West Liberty had a pair of scorers in the pole vault with
Olivia Miller taking fifth place at 10 feet, 2 inches (3.10m) and
Emily Lancaster coming in eighth at 8 feet, 10.25 inches (2.70m).
Field events get things started on Saturday morning with the track finals set for the afternoon.
