Toohey Headlines Final Day as Hilltoppers Earn Podium Finishes at MEC Championships

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Liberty University men's and women's track & field teams wrapped up competition Tuesday at the Mountain East Conference Championships with a strong final day, highlighted by event titles, school records, and multiple podium finishes.

The Hilltopper men placed third overall with 90.5 points, while the women finished tied for fourth with 70 points in a competitive three-day meet.

West Liberty was led by a dominant performance in the men's 800 meters, where the Hilltoppers claimed the top two spots. Senior Francis Toohey captured the conference title with a time of 1:53.99, while freshman Zachary Workman followed closely behind in second at 1:54.28 to secure a 1-2 finish.

On the track, freshman Dominic Gianangeli delivered a record-setting performance in the 400 meters, placing fifth with a personal-best time of 49.32 to set a new school record. Gianangeli also added points in the 200 meters with a sixth-place finish and helped lead the 4x400 relay team to a fourth-place finish.

The Hilltoppers opened the day with a strong showing in the 4x100 relay, as the men's team of Isaac Zelaski, Gianangeli, Harry Kanu, and Carson Brundige placed third.

In the field events, West Liberty showcased its depth in the pole vault, led by freshman Dominick Gagum's third-place finish. John Bowen added a fifth-place effort, while Reese Burnside and Max McCoy also scored. Ethan Furbee highlighted the high jump with a runner-up finish, while George Donovic added points in both the high jump and 400-meter hurdles, where he placed third with a personal-best time.

On the women's side, the 4x100 relay team of Marissa Scott, Ky'Ara Ross, Kaylee Davis, and Sierra Lanham earned a runner-up finish, while the 4x400 relay squad set a new school record with a fifth-place performance.

Individually, Ky'Ara Ross led the way with a second-place finish in the 100 meters and added points in both the 200 meters and long jump to cap a strong championship meet. Sierra Lanham also contributed in multiple events, placing in both the 100 and 200 meters.

Marissa Scott added a fourth-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles, while Sasha Hunter and Hannah Rowan both scored in the 400 meters with personal-best performances.

In the field events, Sierra Davis recorded a fourth-place finish in the discus to add to West Liberty's scoring total.
