HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's tennis team jumped out to an early lead but couldn't hang on here Wednesday as No. 5-seeded UVa-Wise rallied past fourth-seeded WLU by a 4-2 tally in a Mountain East Conference Tournament quarterfinal at Marshall University.
Coach
Heather Gallagher's Hilltoppers got off to a strong start, winning two of the three doubles matches to claim the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead into singles play.
Carleyah McLean and
Luisa Agudelo teamed up for a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles before
Laura Huwe and Alex Olson clinched the doubles point with a 7-5 nod in the No. 3 slot.
West Liberty kept right on rolling when singles play got under way as Agudelo made short work of the Cavaliers' Olivia Dishner, breezing to a 6-2 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles for a 2-0 WLU lead but that proved to be the final point for the Black and Gold.
UVa-Wise got on the board with a straight-set win at No. 3 singles before the Cavaliers' Akimenko twins turned momentum decisively in the Virginia squad's favor. Liza and Katya Akimenko, who had tuned up for singles action with a 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles, put UVa-Wise ahead to stay with straight-set wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles.
Montana Hill then gave the Cavaliers their fourth and final point with a 6-1 6-3 victory at No. 4 singles, halting play with the No. 6 singles match between WLU's Olson and UVa-Wise's Lillian Morris still in progress.
