West Liberty's Wagner is First Team All-MEC

Women's Tennis | 4/30/2019 4:30:00 PM

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – West Liberty University women's tennis standout Raissa Wagner was one of only two freshmen to earn first-team All-Mountain East Conference honors when the MEC coaches announced their 2019 honor roll on Tuesday.
Wagner, who hails from Brasilia, Brazil, helped lead Coach Heather Gallagher's Hilltoppers to a Top 10 ranking in the Atlantic Region and a 6-2 record in MEC play. The Black and Gold are the No. 4 seed in this week's MEC Tournament but are the only conference team with a win against No. 1 seed and defending champion Charleston.
The WLU freshman started at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles for the Black and Gold all season, pitting her against the opponent's top player throughout the year. Wagner picked up eight wins in singles play and posted a solid 12-9 mark in doubles action.
Charleston junior Kristine Gegeshidze was voted MEC Player of the Year while UC head coach Shari Reed earned Coach of the Year honors. Liza Akimenko of UVa-Wise was the MEC Freshman of the Year.
The Hilltoppers open MEC Tournament play Wednesday at 11 a.m. when they take on No. 5 seed UVa-Wise in a quarterfinal match on the outdoor courts at Marshall University.
