WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University men's tennis team couldn't get anything going against Charleston Saturday afternoon and dropped 7-0 decision to the Kanawha County squad at the Edgar Martin Tennis Complex.
Coach
Sam McCullough's Hilltoppers (9-9, 4-3) had a chance to pick up the doubles point after
Anton Schulz and
Maurits Smit coasted to a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles but the Golden Eagles (11-7, 5-1) pulled out hard-fought wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots to grab the early advantage.
Charleston swept all six singles matches to complete the shutout. West Liberty's
Camilo Moncayo nearly put WLU on the board at No. 1 singles when he bounced back from an opening-set loss to force the match into a tiebreaker with a 6-4 win in the second set.
The Golden Eagles' ace, junior Ben Lakeman, stole back the momentum in the tiebreaker and prevailed, 10-6, to finish off the sweep.
The Hilltoppers head to eastern Pennsylvania next week for a pair of non-conference matches. West Liberty visits Kutztown on Friday before traveling to Bloomsburg on Saturday.
