HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The West Liberty University men's tennis team closed out its Spring Break trip to Hilton Head here Thursday with a 6-1 loss to Barton (N.C.).
Coach
Sam McCullough's Hilltoppers (1-4) found themselves in an early hole after narrowly missing out on the doubles point but couldn't get anything going against the Bulldogs (4-6) in singles play, coming up short in five of the six matches.
Maurits Smit turned in a pair of strong performances for the Black and Gold.
The lanky freshman from The Netherlands teamed with sophomore
Anton Schulz to post a convincing 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles. Barton took a 6-2 decision at No. 3 doubles and earned the doubles point by prevailing in a 7-6 tiebreaker at No. 1 doubles.
Smit provided West Liberty with its only point of the match with a come-from-behind victory at No. 5 singles. After taking a 6-3 loss in the opening set, he rallied to win the second set in a tiebreaker and then pulled away to a 10-5 nod in the finale.
The Hilltoppers open their Mountain East Conference slate at home on March 23 with a 1 p.m. match against Fairmont State.
