ERIE, Pa. – The West Liberty University women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Mercyhurst here Sunday in a battle of regionally-ranked squads at the Westwood Racquet Club.
Coach
Heather Gallagher's Hilltoppers (7-2), ranked No. 7 in the Atlantic Region, got off to a strong start by winning two of the three doubles matches to claim the doubles point but the No. 3-ranked Lakers (6-4) took five of the six singles matchups to earn the win.
After WLU took a 6-0 shutout loss at No. 1 doubles, the No. 3 doubles team of
Laura Huwe and Alex Olson evened matters with a 6-3 win.
Carleyah McLean and
Luisa Agudelo pulled out a tiebreaker win at No. 2 doubles to give West Liberty the doubles point.
The Hilltoppers couldn't get anything going in singles play, however, as all five of Mercyhurst's singles wins came in straight sets. Huwe picked up the only singles point for the Black and Gold, outlasting Ivona Plecevic in a 10-8 tiebreaker after splitting the first two sets at No. 3 singles.
West Liberty heads to Slippery Rock (Pa.) on Friday for another non-conference test. Doubles play starts at 3:30 p.m.
