INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Despite having their 9-game winning streak snapped by nationally-ranked Glenville State on Saturday, the West Liberty University women's basketball team has cracked the Atlantic Region Top 10 for the second straight week.
Coach
Kyle Cooper's Hilltoppers checked in at No. 9 on Wednesday when the NCAA Division II Ranking Committee released its second weekly set of Atlantic Region rankings.
These rankings are used to help set the field for next month's NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Tournament. Each league's tournament champion receives an automatic regional bid with the top five remaining teams in the final set of regional rankings filling out the 8-team bracket.
The highest-ranked team serves as host squad for the regional tournament.
There was plenty of movement in the rankings this week as last week's No. 1 squad, Indiana (Pa.), dropped all the way to No. 4 following a 73-65 loss at California (Pa.). Virginia Union took over the No. 1 spot with California (Pa.) moving up to No. 2. Glenville State's win against the Hilltoppers kept the Pioneers locked in at No. 3, ahead of Indiana.
Bowie State (Md.) and Edinboro stayed put at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively, while West Liberty dropped from No. 7 to No. 9 off the Glenville setback. Fellow MEC members No. 7 Charleston and No. 8 Concord, each moved up one spot with Bloomsburg once again rounding out the list at No. 10.
The final set of weekly rankings will be released on March 6 with the 2019 NCAA Division II tournament field to be announced on March 10. The Atlantic Region Tournament will be held March 15-18 with the 2019 NCAA Division II Elite Eight slated for March 26-29 in Columbus, Ohio.
The West Liberty women host Notre Dame on Wednesday. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. at the ASRC.
