WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Nyia Setla, a highly-touted defensive specialist from a perennial Michigan high school power, is the latest native of the Wolverine State to continue her athletic and academic careers with the West Liberty University volleyball program.
The 5-6 Setla, a standout libero at state-ranked Northville (Mich.) High School, adds even more spice to the strong Michigan flavor in Coach
Kayla Mull's WLU program.
The newest Hilltopper joins fellow 2020 recruit Kaija Sydlowski of Ann Arbor along with returning players
Emily Reedy (Grosse Ile),
Nina Billotto (Oakland),
Faith Hayes (Battle Creek) and
Ashton Wronikowski (Bronson) as Michigan natives on next season's Black and Gold roster.
"Nyia's ability to read the game combined with her overall athleticism and high-energy court presence make her a great fit for our team and our program," said Mull, the winningest coach in West Liberty volleyball history.
Setla earned All-Conference honors in the Kensington Lakes Activities Association (KLAA) each of her last two seasons. She played a key role in helping lead Northville to the Michigan Division I Final Four as a junior and followed that up with an outstanding senior season that saw Northville rise as high as No. 12 in the Michigan Division I high school rankings while walking away with another KLAA division title.
Mull's West Liberty teams have averaged more than 20 wins a season over the past four years, advancing to three Mountain East Conference Tournament Final Fours over that span.
