WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's tennis team came out on the short end of an 8-1 score against Slippery Rock in Saturday's battle of regionally-ranked squads on Senior Day at the Edgar Martin Tennis Complex.
It was the final home match for Coach
Heather Gallagher's four talented seniors – Ana Berbel, Lisa Nachtwey, Alaina Pauley and Kate Pinchuk – who are hoping to receive the second NCAA Division II Tournament at-large bid of their careers later this week.
The Rock came into Saturday's match ranked No. 5 in the Atlantic Region and wasted no time putting the No. 6 Hilltoppers in a hole, sweeping the three doubles matches to carry a 3-0 lead into singles play.
Pinchuk battled back from a 6-2 loss in the opening set of her No. 4 singles match against Olivia Warner to force a tiebreaker with a 6-2 nod of her own in the second set.
The senior vet prevailed by a 10-8 count in the tiebreaker to put the hosts on the board but it wasn't enough as Slippery Rock swept the other five singles matches in straight sets to close out the win.
