BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's tennis team scored a big road win in Mountain East Conference action here Tuesday afternoon, handing West Virginia Wesleyan a 5-4 setback on the Bobcats' home courts.
The win kept Coach
Heather Gallagher's Hilltoppers (4-1, 3-0) unbeaten in league play and tied with Charleston at the top of the MEC standings while dropping Wesleyan (4-2, 3-1) into a third-place tie with Fairmont State.
A strong performance in doubles keyed the victory for the Black and Gold as West Liberty swept all three doubles matches to grab an early 3-0 advantage.
Maurine Oudart and
Thais Mendez scored an 8-5 victory at No. 1 doubles while
Laura Huwe and
Alaina Pauley gritted out an 8-6 nod at No. 2 doubles. The No. 3 doubles tandem of Kate Pinchuk and
Ana Berbel breezed to an 8-2 decision to put the Hilltoppers in command.
The Bobcats battled back with four singles wins – including a pair of three-set verdicts – but West Liberty got straight-set triumphs from Mendez at No. 3 singles and Pinchuk at No. 5 singles to wrap up the match.
The Hilltoppers will be back home on Saturday to host UVa-Wise in a noon match at the Edgar Martin Tennis Complex.
