West Liberty, Fairmont Split Wild MEC Twinbill

Baseball | 4/28/2017 8:30:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – West Liberty and Fairmont State remained locked in a tie for second place in the Mountain East Conference North Division here Friday afternoon after splitting a wild doubleheader at Kovalick Field.
Coach Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (23-17, 17-9) rallied to a 13-7 win in the second game after seeing the Falcons (25-19, 17-9) come from behind for an 11-9 victory in the opener.
In the scheduled 9-inning finale, Fairmont State erased a 3-0 WLU lead with a four-run uprising in the top of the fourth but the Black and Gold went ahead to stay with five runs in the bottom of the frame.
West Liberty wasn't finished. Justice Jackson cranked out a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth and Hunter Westlake added an RBI single in the sixth before putting the game out of reach with a two-run bomb in the bottom of the eighth.
Westlake had a huge game, driving in six runs with a home run, triple and two singles while Jackson had a single to go along with his circuit blast. Coby Eckstein added a double and a single with Ethan Estes and Chad Harper each contributing a pair of singles. Mike Adams weighed in with a two-run single and WLU also got run-scoring base knocks from Yale Hughes and Bub Haddox.
The Hilltoppers were just four outs away from victory in the opener when the Falcons scored four runs with two out in the top of the sixth to turn a 5-4 WLU lead into an 8-5 West Liberty deficit.
The hosts got two of those runs back in the bottom of the sixth, trimming the margin to 8-7, but Fairmont pushed three more runs across the plate in the top of the seventh and the Hilltoppers' two-run rally in the bottom of the frame proved too little, too late.
Yale Hughes drove in two runs with a pair of doubles while Tyler Ramsay had a two-run double. Eckstein also doubled home a run while Adams and Nolan Marcus each had a single and an RBI.
The teams return to the Kovalick Field diamond on Saturday for another 1 p.m. doubleheader.
