Hilltoppers Fall in Non-Conference Slugfest

Box Score PARKERSBURG, W.Va. – The West Liberty University baseball team battled all the way back from a 6-run deficit here Tuesday but couldn't get over the hump as Ohio Valley pulled out a 10-7 win in a scheduled 9-inning game.
Coach Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (22-16) found themselves in an early hole as the Fighting Scots (24-18) plated three runs in the bottom of the first and three more in the second frame to grab a quick 6-0 lead.
West Liberty responded quickly, batting around in the top of the third to push five runs across the plate and tying the game with another run in the top of the fourth.
Ohio Valley used back-to-back doubles and a pair of Hilltopper errors to take the lead for good with a four-run uprising in the bottom of the fifth. West Liberty got one run back in the sixth but couldn't score again as the hosts walked away with the non-conference win.
Hunter Westlake had three singles and drove in a pair of runs for WLU while Justice Jackson also slammed out a trio of singles. Coby Eckstein added two doubles and an RBI and Yale Hughes also had a multi-hit game with a pair of singles.
Ethan Estes doubled home a pair of runs and Bub Haddox had a single and two RBIs. Mike Adams and Chad Harper each doubled in a losing cause.
The Hilltoppers return to Mountain East Conference action this weekend when they host Fairmont State in a pair of 1 p.m. doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday at Kovalick Field.
