Stagani Fires Gem as WLU Sweeps W.Va. State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Liberty University baseball team swept a Mountain East Conference doubleheader from West Virginia State Sunday afternoon at Cal Bailey Field.
Coach Eric Burkle's surging Hilltoppers (16-6, 11-1) posted a 5-0 win in the first game before handing the Yellowjackets (11-15, 4-8) a 7-5 loss in the finale to complete the sweep.
West Liberty ace Greg Stagani simply overpowered the West Virginia State lineup in the opener. The senior righthander racked up 13 strikeouts and gave up only one walk in a dominating 4-hit shutout.
His Hilltopper teammates played a little long ball to back him up. Mike Adams homered and singled to drive in three runs while Yale Hughes also went deep and added a single for a multi-hit game. Nolan Marcus had a single and an RBI and Alex Rojas doubled.
In the second game, Hughes tossed eight strong innings to get the win with Tori Fuscardo coming on in the ninth to pick up the save.
The West Liberty bats kept booming, obliterating an early 2-1 Yellowjacket lead with a four-run uprising in the top of the third. Tyler Ramsay highlighted the inning with a two-run single that put the Black and Gold ahead to stay.
Ramsay had a big game at the plate, adding a two-run homer in the fifth to provide a little cushion and finishing with two singles, a home run and four RBIs. Ethan Estes also homered and singled while Adams had another multi-hit game with two singles and an RBI. Bub Haddox added an RBI base knock and Rojas raked out his second double of the day.
The Hilltoppers step out of MEC play on Tuesday for a 3 p.m. game against Seton Hill in Greensburg, Pa.
