Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The West Liberty University baseball team got its Mountain East Conference season off to a flying start here Monday by sweeping a doubleheader from Glenville State at the Sue Morris Complex.
Coach Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (7-5, 2-0) rolled to a 15-2 "mercy rule" win in the opener and followed that up by coasting to an 8-3 win in the finale.
In the first game, West Liberty exploded for six runs in the top of the second and never took its foot off the gas. That was more than enough offense for starting pitcher Sean Pare, who held the Pioneers (3-10, 2-2) to just four singles over the first six innings to pick up the win. Cody Shook closed out the win with a scoreless inning of relief.
Justice Jackson had a huge game at the plate, driving in 5 runs with two doubles and a home run. Nolan Marcus chased home 4 runs with a homer and a double while Coby Eckstein added two doubles, a single and an RBI. Ethan Estes chipped in with two singles and 3 RBIs, Bub Haddox singled twice and drove in a run while Yale Hughes added a double.
Justin Retzer took his turn in the spotlight for West Liberty in the second game as the Hilltopper starter carried a 4-hit shutout into the ninth inning before Tory Fuscardo came on to get the final out. Retzer struck out 9 Pioneers and gave up only one walk in an impressive early-season outing.
Once again the WLU offense provided plenty of support, snapping a scoreless tie with 3 runs in the top of the fourth and putting the game out of reach with 3 more scores in the top of the fifth.
Hughes led the way with 2 singles and 4 RBIs while Marcus had another multi-hit game with two singles and an RBI. Mike Adams singled twice and Eckstein had a 2-run base knock.
The Black and Gold are scheduled to host Concord on Saturday in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Kovalick Field.
