Hilltopper Baseball Splits in North Carolina

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The regionally-ranked West Liberty University baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader at Chowan Saturday afternoon.
Coach Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (3-1), No. 10 in the NCBWA's preseason Atlantic Region rankings, dropped the first game at Hawkins Field by a 7-3 count before pounding out a 9-3 win in the finale.
In the opener, West Liberty jumped out to an early 3-0 lead but six hits, two errors and a walk allowed Chowan (3-5) to bat around in the bottom of the second. When the dust had settled, the Hawks had sent seven runs across the plate - four of them unearned - and the Hilltoppers couldn't battle back.
Ethan Estes doubled twice and drove in a run for the Black and Gold while Nolan Marcus added two singles and an RBI. Mike Adams also had an RBI base knock.
West Liberty rebounded with a vengeance in the second game as four Hilltoppers slammed home runs to key a 13-hit barrage that saw eight WLU players drive in at least one run.
Tyler Ramsay belted a two-run homer while Estes, Adams and Yale Hughes crushing solo blasts. Hughes also doubled for a multi-hit game and Estes had a single to go along with his four-bagger.
Bub Haddox drove in a run with a double and single while Marcus and Tyler Cooley each collected two singles and an RBI. Coby Eckstein rounded out the attack with an RBI single.
Sean Pare hurled the first five innings to pick up the win.
The Hilltoppers and Hawks return to Hawkins Field at noon on Sunday for a single game.
