West Liberty Baseball Sweeps Concord

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BECKLEY, W.Va. – The regionally-ranked West Liberty University baseball team got its season off to a flying start here Friday afternoon by sweeping a Mountain East Conference doubleheader from Concord at Epling Stadium.
Coach Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (2-0, 2-0), ranked No. 10 in the Atlantic Region preseason poll, pulled out a 4-2 extra-inning win in the opener before hammering their way to a 16-5 blowout of the host Mountain Lions (0-4, 0-2) in the finale.
In the opener, Chris Follina and Chad Harper delivered clutch 2-out RBI singles in the top of the eighth to provide the winning runs for the Black and Gold.
Tory Fuscardo, who had come on in relief to squelch a Concord rally with a double-play grounder in the bottom of the seventh, worked a scoreless eighth inning for the win.
Mike Adams doubled twice, scored two runs and chased home another for West Liberty while Justice Jackson singled and drove in a run.
In the second game, the Hilltoppers carried a 7-5 lead into the sixth inning before exploding for nine runs over the final two frames.
The Black and Gold raked six Mountain Lion hurlers for a total of 16 hits. Adams led the barrage with three RBIs on a triple, double and single while Bub Haddox had a double, single and RBI.
Tyler Ramsay cranked out a two-run homer, Coby Eckstein delivered a bases-loaded triple and Trey Smith contributed a two-run single to the onslaught. Follina, Jackson and Derek Haddox also weighed in with RBI singles. Yale Hughes worked the first four innings on the mound to earn the win.
The Hilltoppers head to Murfreesboro, N.C. tomorrow for a noon doubleheader against Chowan.
