GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Freshman guard Audrey Tingle just missed charting a triple-double in her fourth collegiate game here Saturday but it wasn't enough to help West Liberty avoid a 96-75 road loss to defending Mountain East Conference champion Glenville State.
Coach Kyle Cooper's Lady Hilltoppers (1-3, 0-1) gave the Pioneers (2-1, 1-0) all they could handle for the better part of three quarters before running out of gas.
With Tingle weaving her way through traffic and junior pivot Marissa Brown working the paint, West Liberty came out strong against Glenville's full-court pressure and led for much of the first half.
Brown scored 10 of her 14 points in the first quarter and WLU pushed its advantage as high as 8 points on two occasions. The Pioneer pressure began to take its toll late in the half and the hosts took a 42-40 lead at the break.
The lead swung back and forth several times in the early part of the third quarter and WLU trailed just 53-51 midway through the frame when the defending champs put together what proved to be the game-clinching run.
A 3-point play by returning MEC Player of the Year Paris McLeod capped a 13-2 spurt which put the hosts up, 66-53, with 2:32 left in the third quarter. Glenville held a 68-58 lead at the end of the frame and never took its foot off the gas over the final 10 minutes.
Neither team shot well from the perimeter. West Liberty was just 5-of-24 from behind the 3-point arc while the Pioneers hit just 3-of-26 from long range.
Glenville also forced 25 turnovers but it was the Pioneers' work on the offensive glass that proved to be the difference as an 18-6 edge in offensive rebounds led to a whopping 23-2 advantage in second-chance points.
The 5-6 Tingle posted her first career double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds – both game-highs – while also handing out a game-high 8 assists in her Mountain East Conference debut.
McKenna Shives and Grace Fodor added 13 points each to go along with Brown's 14 tallies.
McLeod led four double-figure scorers for Glenville with 15 points.
The West Liberty women return home to host West Virginia Wesleyan on Monday. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. at the ASRC.
