SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The West Liberty University women's tennis team dropped its first dual match of the season here Saturday afternoon with a 7-2 setback at Slippery Rock.
The hosts, who are coming off a run to last year's NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Tournament, took control early by sweeping all three doubles matches before closing out the win by taking four of six in singles play.
Despite the loss, Coach
Heather Gallagher's Hilltoppers (3-1) came away with a couple of impressive performances.
Rhiannon James bounced back from a 6-2 loss in the opening set of her No. 1 singles match to pull out a tiebreaker win in the second set before going on to defeat SRU's Lacey Cohen, 10-6, in the final.
Andrea Puga remained unbeaten at No. 5 singles with a thrilling 7-6 7-6 win against The Rock's Amanda Bruscemi.
The West Liberty women return to action on Friday when they travel to Institite, W.Va. for a Mountain East Conference showdown with defending MEC champion West Virginia State.
