No. 19 Cardinals Take Down WLU Mat Squad

WHEELING, W.Va. – The West Liberty University wrestling team got off to a good start in Thursday's match against No. 19 Wheeling Jesuit but couldn't build on the momentum as the Cardinals pulled away to a 38-3 win at the McDonough Center.
The short-handed Hilltoppers (1-3) came out firing with regionally-ranked Zach Brown pitching a 3-0 shutout in his 125-pound match against Jake Donahue to give West Liberty a quick 3-0 lead.
Unfortunately for the injury-riddled visitors, they had to yield forfeits at 133 and 141 and Jesuit took control with a technical fall at 149 and a first-period pin at 157.
That gave WJU a commanding 23-3 advantage at the midway point and the Hilltoppers were unable to fight their way back into the match.
The West Liberty wrestlers were in the hunt in each of the final five matches only to see the host Cardinals pull out decision wins.
DeMadre Turner dropped a 9-6 verdict at 165 pounds for WLU and Milton Kobaly came out on the short end of a 9-6 tally at 174. Jesuit's Nate Starkey pulled out a 9-6 win against Nate Dawson at 184 and Terrance Fanning claimed a 6-1 nod against Logan Kemp at 197.
The final match of the night went down to the wire with Wheeling Jesuit's Maxwell Lacey riding out the Hilltoppers' Garrett Vulcano to hang on for a 5-4 win.
West Liberty will try to get back on the winning track Sunday afternoon when the Hilltoppers host East Stroudsburg and No. 11-ranked Ashland (Ohio) in a triangular. The first match is set for 1 p.m. at the ASRC.
