WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – West Liberty University wrestler Treygen Morin delivered an impressive performance on the national stage, placing eighth at 60kg in the U.S. Senior Greco Open this past weekend.
The Senior Greco Open represents the highest level of competition in the United States, serving as a pathway to the World Championships, with the champion earning the opportunity to represent Team USA on the international stage. Morin's top-eight finish places him among the nation's elite competitors at the senior level.
Morin's performance marks a significant milestone for the Hilltopper wrestling program. According to head coach Danny Irwin, the accomplishment is believed to be one of the highest-level finishes by a West Liberty wrestler in decades.
"Amazing effort by Treygen and the guys who helped him prepare the last few months leading up to this event," Irwin said. "We believe Treygen is the only West Liberty wrestler to place at a Senior Level event of this caliber outside of Coach Bobby Douglas doing so decades ago. That is some elite company!"
Irwin also emphasized that the result is a reflection of Morin's long-term goals on the international stage.
"This result isn't surprising though," Irwin added. "Treygen has high aspirations of World & Olympic medals, and this was a good step forward toward those goals. We would also like to thank Coach Ivanov and Suples for their support in helping grow wrestling on the Hilltop and helping Treygen pursue those goals."
Morin echoed that sentiment following the competition.
"It was an honor being able to represent the Hilltop at Senior World Team Trials," Morin said. "I'm very grateful for the teammates and coaches that have supported me throughout this training cycle. I look forward to my next opportunity to compete."
Several other Hilltoppers also competed over the weekend. Matt Englehardt posted a 2-2 record at 63kg in the Senior Greco division, while Levi Richmond went 2-2 at 67kg in the U20 Greco division. Bailey Emery competed in the Senior Women's Open.
Morin's performance highlights the continued growth of West Liberty wrestling on the national stage, as the Hilltoppers continue to develop athletes capable of competing among the best in the country.
