Lady Hilltoppers Advance in MEC Tournament

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's tennis team used a strong performance in singles play here Friday to beat UVa-Wise, 5-2, in a Mountain East Conference tournament quarterfinal on the indoor courts at the Huntington Tennis Club.
Coach Heather Gallagher's No. 4-seeded Hilltoppers (8-4) had to come from behind against the upset-minded Cavaliers (8-8) after UVa-Wise won two of the three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead.
The West Liberty women came up big in singles play, however, with four Hilltoppers breezing to convincing straight-set wins to lock up the match.
Raquel Cabero handed the Cavaliers' Aya Melhern a 6-2 6-1 loss at No. 2 singles and WLU's Laura Huwe posted a 6-1 6-2 nod over Bailey Christoforatos at No. 3 singles.
West Liberty's Andrea Puga rolled to a 6-2 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles against Marti Gay and the Hilltoppers' Kate Pinchuk closed up shop with a 6-2 6-2 win against Mackenzie Lawson at No. 6 singles.
Earlier in the day, Pinchuk had teamed up with Ana Berbel for an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles.
The quarterfinal triumph sends West Liberty into Saturday's 11 a.m. semifinal against three-time defending MEC champion West Virginia State.
