WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's tennis team dropped a 6-3 decision to Slippery Rock (Pa.) here Sunday afternoon in a battle of perennial NCAA Division II Atlantic Region powers.
The Rock (2-0) hadn't beaten Coach Heather Gallagher's Hilltoppers (4-2) since the 2011 season but jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead by sweeping all three doubles matches. The Black and Gold needed to win five of the six singles matches to pull out the win and put up a good fight before finally falling short.
After losing the opening set, Emily Dawson rebounded to gut out a three-set win for the hosts at No. 2 singles. Ana Berbel and Kate Pinchuk followed the same formula for success at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively, but The Rock prevailed in the other three singles spots to take the match. The Hilltoppers return to Mountain East Conference action on Tuesday with a 3 p.m. match at Fairmont State.
