Box Score WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. –
Kailee Howe set a Mountain East Conference record with 17 assists and the West Liberty University women scorched the nets at a 60 percent clip
Thursday night in hammering Concord, 98-61, at the ASRC.
Coach
Lynn Ullom's Hilltoppers (15-7, 12-4) opened the game on a 15-4 blitz and were never challenged in completing the season sweep of the Mountain Lions (6-14, 6-10). West Liberty had blasted Concord by a 90-65 count in their first meeting on
Jan. 5 in Athens.
"I thought we passed the ball exceptionally well tonight," Ullom said after watching his squad hang onto its share of first place in the MEC standings, "especially in the second half. We got to spots and found the open man. When we keep the game simple, we can be pretty good."
The Hilltoppers were more than pretty good on this night as West Liberty opened up a 47-27 halftime lead and never took their foot off the gas.
Howe was a perpetual motion machine, quarterbacking WLU's blistering transition game to near-perfection while hitting enough shots of her own to keep the defense honest.
She had set the previous MEC record of 16 assists in the Hilltoppers' first game against the Mountain Lions last month. Howe's record-setting 17th assist came with just under 5 minutes remaining when she fed
Jenn Mohney deep in the right corner for Mohney's fourth 3-pointer of the night.
"Kailee is such a well-conditioned athlete that she's able to push the pace every second she's on the floor," Ullom said. "That enables her to create great angles and scoring opportunities not just for herself but for her teammates, as well."
Howe posted her seventh double-double in the last eight games with 12 points to go along with her 17 assists. She also grabbed 5 rebounds and delivered a team-high 3 steals.
The Hilltoppers provided plenty of support.
Liz Flowers hit her first three attempts from behind the 3-point arc en route to a game-high 27 points. Flowers finished the night 7-for-12 from behind the arc and just missed a double-double with a team-high 9 rebounds to go along with 4 blocked shots. Mohney added 18 points off the bench and
Hillary Southworth tossed in 16 more.
"Now that we're starting to get some people back from injury, it allows us to bring
Jenn Mohney off the bench," Ullom said. "You always want to have someone coming in on that first rotation who can give you a lift and Jenn brings great energy and production to that role."
Rachel Artrip was the only double-figure scorer for Concord, which was held to 29 percent shooting (23-of-77) on the night. Artrip finished with 25 points and 10 rebounds.
The Lady Hilltoppers return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host UVA-Wise in a 2 p.m. tipoff at the ASRC.
