Box Score GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Glenville State's Paige Tuttle hit a 3-point shot with just over a second remaining here Thursday night and the Pioneers snapped the West Liberty women's 4-game winning streak with a 70-67 upset at the Waco Center.
The loss spoiled a fine comeback effort by Coach
Lynn Ullom's Lady Hilltoppers (10-5, 7-2), who had trailed throughout the second half before coming on strong down the stretch.
Kailee Howe's 8-foot stop-and-pop jumper put West Liberty up, 67-66, with 37 seconds to go. The Hilltoppers had led by as many as 12 points midway through the first half but this was the visitors' first lead of the second half.
Glenville's Keyanna Tate was fouled with 18 seconds left and made the first of her two free throws to tie the game at 67-67.
The game remained deadlocked when Tate missed the second foul toss and WLU came back downcourt looking for the game-winner.
It wasn't to be, however, as the Pioneers' Madison Martin came up with a steal at the top of the key as the clock ticked past the 10-second mark.
Tate was cut off on a drive to the rim but quickly whipped a pass back to a wide-open Tuttle, who hit nothing but net from a foot behind the arc on the right wing.
Liz Flowers led the Hilltoppers with 26 points while Howe had a double-double with 16 points and 10 assists.
Jasmin Kiley also hit double-figures with 10 points while
Hillary Southworth grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds in her first game back from an extended injury layoff.
Tate led all scorers with a game-high 30 points – including an 11-for-14 showing from the charity stripe. Tuttle was Glenville's only other double-figure scorer with 10 points.
The West Liberty women will try to rebound on Saturday with another tough road test at Fairmont State. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. at Joe Retton Arena.
