Box Score 4 ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The West Liberty University volleyball team aimed high on opening weekend, making its 2014 debut at the highly-competitive Maryville (MO) Invitational.
Coach
Kayla Fetsko's Hilltoppers came out on the short end of the scoreboard in all four matches but gained valuable experience against the talented competition which should pay dividends when they enter the Mountain East Conference portion of their slate.
West Liberty opened with a 3-0 loss to host Maryville on Friday by scores of 25-21, 25-17 and 25-12. The Hilltoppers split the first two sets with Kentucky Wesleyan in Friday's late match before KWC took the next two sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-23 to take the nod.
Saturday's early match saw WLU fight back from an early two-set deficit against unbeaten Minnesota-Crookston to gut out a 30-28 decision in the third set only to run out of gas in the fourth set. West Liberty wrapped up its tourney run Saturday afternoon with a straight-set loss to St. Joseph's (MO).
Chelsea Bertie hit double-figures in kills three times on the weekend and paced the Hilltopper attack with a total of 40 kills.
Nicole Sadecky backed Bertie with 28 kills and
Sydney Scherer added 25.
Chelsea Byrge led the team with 96 assists on the weekend while
Courtney Pyeritz was tops with 64 digs.
The West Liberty women will be back in action on Friday when they travel to Erie, Pa. for the first day of the MEC/PSAC Challenge. The event is being co-hosted by Mercyhurst and Gannon.
