SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The unbeaten West Liberty University women's tennis team roared from behind with a dominant performance in singles play here Sunday to hand Slippery Rock a 6-3 loss on The Rock's home courts.
Coach
Heather Gallagher's Hilltoppers (6-0) found themselves on the short end of a 2-1 count after the doubles matches as Slippery Rock (0-1) posted wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.
Alaina Pauley and
Raquel Cabero teamed up for an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles to get the Black and Gold on the board and the perennial Atlantic Region power got back on track in singles play.
West Liberty posted straight-set wins in five of the six singles matches and nearly made it a clean sweep with
Emily Dawson taking The Rock's Nina Barbano to a tiebreaker at No. 2 singles only to come out on the short end of a 10-7 count.
Cabero,
Lauren Howard,
Alex Barr, Kate Pinchuk and
Andrea Puga all came through with singles victories as the Hilltoppers rolled to their sixth win in as many matches.
West Liberty puts that six-match winning streak on the line Thursday when the Hilltoppers host Charleston in an early Mountain East Conference test. The match is set for a 3 p.m. start at the Edgar Martin Tennis Complex.
