WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's basketball team beat Glenville State at its own game Saturday afternoon, outracing the nation's leading scoring team 101-93 in an early-season meeting of the West Virginia Conference unbeaten at the ASRC.
Jasmin Kiley came off the bench with a career-high 32 points and fellow freshman backcourter
Liz Flowers dropped in 20 more while grabbing a team-high 8 rebounds to help the Hilltoppers (6-2, 4-0) break open a see-saw affair.
“This was by far our best game of the season,” WLU head coach
Lynn Ullom said. “I thought we passed the ball exceptionally well today but the biggest improvement was in the mental part of the game. We did a much better job of staying focused and avoiding those in-game lapses.”
After 14 ties and 14 lead changes through the first 25 minutes, West Liberty went ahead to stay, 60-59, on a conventional 3-point play by Kiley with 16:10 showing on the second half clock.
Hillary Southworth then found Kiley on a runout after a missed shot by the Pioneers (6-2, 3-1) for a 62-59 margin at 15:54 and the Hilltoppers began opening up some space.
That quick spurt touched off what blossomed into a 19-4 West Liberty run, capped by a Kiley 3-pointer that gave the Hilltoppers their largest lead of the day, 76-63, as the clock ticked past the 13-minute mark.
Glenville State, which was one of the teams receiving votes in this week's NCAA Division II Top 25, didn't go away quietly and quickly began chipping away at the deficit.
A 3-pointer from the corner by leading scorer Ginny Mills pulled the visitors within a basket, 87-85, with 4:25 remaining but West Liberty had the answer.
Kiley, a freshman from Las Vegas, Nev., lobbed in her sixth 3-pointer of the day and followed that up with another fast-break hoop for a 92-85 bulge with 3:32 left.
Glenville's Kenyona Simmons powered her way to the basket for a layup but the Hilltoppers worked the ball around to Southworth at the other end and the junior standout splashed home a dagger of a 3-pointer for a 95-87 lead with less than 3 minutes to go.
The Pioneers never threatened again.
“Jasmin has a higher skill level than a lot of freshmen,” Ullom said, “so she and Liz are the type of players who really thrive when the floor opens up like it did today.
“What made this such a good win, though, is that we had to substitute a lot more today because Glenville pushes the pace so much and we got positive contributions from every kid we put on the court. This was a really good team win.”
Southworth backed Kiley and Flowers with 18 points, a game-high 6 assists and 6 rebounds while
Emily Blevins and
Meghan Wiseman chipped in with 10 points each.
Simmons led the way for the Pioneers with 23 points while Mills finished with 21. Ashleigh Fossett added 17 points in a losing cause.
The Hilltoppers don't play again until Jan. 3 when they open second semester play on the road against Davis & Elkins.
