GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's basketball team couldn't solve Glenville State's up-tempo defensive pressure Saturday afternoon and dropped a 106-77 decision to the Pioneers at Jesse Lilly Gym.
The Pioneers (8-3, 6-1), who lead the nation in scoring, used a late first-half run to take a 49-35 halftime lead against the Hilltoppers (7-4, 4-2) and took complete command with a 13-0 midway through the second half before coasting home.
Senior Kayla Ayers came off the bench to lead West Liberty with 17 points and 10 rebounds despite being limited to just 19 minutes of action due to flu-like symptoms.
Hillary Southworth and Emily Blevins added 15 and 14 points, respectively, while Jenn Cessna joined them in double-figures with 10 points – all in the second half.
Tenisha Wilson led all scorers for Glenville State with 22 points while Danielle Woodmore added 20 points. Mishae Miles chipped in with 18 points and 13 rebounds while Kenyell Goodson drained four 3-point field goals for a dozen points.
The Pioneers won the battle of the boards by a 59-53 margin – including a staggering 31 offensive rebounds – and were charted with 17 steals and 6 blocked shots while committing only 7 turnovers in 40 minutes. Glenville made 39-of-103 field goal attempts, went 10-for-30 from behind the 3-point arc and cashed 18-of-24 free throws.
The Hilltoppers shot 28-of-73 from the floor, made 9-of-27 3-pointers and were a perfect 12-for-12 from the charity stripe.
West Liberty opens a four-game home stand Thursday night when Fairmont State comes to the ASRC for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
