WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University men's tennis team split a pair of matches with Pennsylvania schools on the final weekend of the regular season.
Coach Sam McCullough's Hilltoppers knocked off Mercyhurst, 6-3, on Friday afternoon at the Edgar Martin Tennis Complex but dropped a 5-2 decision to Millersville on Saturday in a showdown between two regionally-ranked squads on the indoor courts.
West Liberty rallied to win five of the six singles matches after Mercyhurst came out of the doubles competition with a 2-1 lead on Friday.
Erik Jahreskog, Ayman Barakat, Alex Conway, Andy Sickles and Darren Fields collected singles victories for the Hilltoppers with Fields and Conway teaming up for the win at No. 3 doubles.
Saturday's Millersville match was played in tournament format with play being halted after the fifth win for either team.
The Marauders, ranked No. 9 in the region, won a crucial tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles to take a 2-1 lead into the singles matches. That allowed Millersville to close out the match with wins at Nos. 1, 2 and 6 singles.
Fields and Conway won their No. 3 doubles match for West Liberty, the region's No. 7-ranked squad. Conway also collected the Hilltoppers' other point with a straight-set win at No. 4 singles.
West Liberty heads to Charleston on Friday to compete in the 2011 WVIAC Men's Tennis Championships. Pairings and seedings will be announced later this week.
