BOX SCORE
GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Opportunity knocked for the West Liberty women's basketball team at Glenville State Saturday night but even with senior standout
Tori Hansen becoming the leading scorer in school history, a cold-shooting Hilltopper team just couldn't answer.
The host Pioneers jumped out to a double-digit lead less than four minutes after the opening tap, leap-frogging West Liberty and Charleston to take over first place in the West Virginia Conference standings with a 112-85 victory at the Jesse R. Lilly Gymnasium.
The Hilltoppers (21-5, 16-4) could have retaken the WVIAC lead with a win after Charleston was upset by Seton Hill, 59-57, on Saturday but when West Liberty missed 9 of its first 10 shots, Glenville State (18-7, 16-4) – which leads the nation in scoring and 3-point field goals – was off to the races.
The Hilltoppers had held the Pioneers to a season-low 1-of-19 shooting on 3-pointers in an 85-63 blowout at the ASRC in early January but Glenville went 4-for-5 from behind the arc in the first five minutes of Saturday's rematch to take a 20-5 lead.
West Liberty's shooting woes continued to deepen as the deficit grew. When Danielle Woodmore's driving layup produced the biggest lead of the first half at 36-15 with 10:20 on the clock, the Hilltoppers had made just 4-of-25 shots from the floor.
Glenville rolled on to a 60-43 halftime lead and West Liberty never got closer than 13 points in the second half.
The lone bright spot in the West Liberty loss was provided by Hansen, who scored a game-high 25 points to become the school's all-time leading scorer with 2,155 career points. The previous record was held by WLU Hall of Famer Melissa Hammond, who had 2,150 points from 1989-93.
Woodmore's 22 points led six double-figure scorers for Glenville State. Mishae Miles backed Woodmore with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
The Hilltoppers shot a season-low 28 percent (25-of-89) from the floor for the game and were 15-of-48 on 3-point attempts. Glenville hit 60 percent (12-of-20) from behind the arc on the night but cooled off in the second half to finish at just 50 percent (42-of-83) overall for the game.
West Liberty will host West Virginia Wesleyan in the Lady Hilltoppers' final home game on Monday. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. at the ASRC.
