West Liberty women roll in WVIAC Tournament quarterfinal
Lauren Howard is 2011 WVIAC Freshman of the Year
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The impressive regular-season performance of the West Liberty University tennis team was rewarded today when the West Virginia Conference coaches announced the 2011 All-WVIAC women's tennis team during a break in the action at the 2011 WVIAC Tennis Championships.
Coach
Heather Gallagher's Hilltoppers claimed three of the 10 spots on the All-Conference roster and West Liberty freshman phenom
Lauren Howard was honored as the 2011 WVIAC Freshman of the Year.
The WLU squad celebrated the All-Conference announcement with a 5-2 victory against No. 6 seed Seton Hill this morning in the quarterfinals.
The No. 3-seeded Hilltoppers will take on No. 2 seed West Virginia State today at 4:30 p.m. in the tournament semifinals. The finals of the 2011 WVIAC Tennis Championships are set for 1 p.m. Saturday.
Individual results from this morning's quarterfinal match were unavailable.
Joining Howard as major award winners on the All-WVIAC Team were West Virginia State senior Brittany Craig, who was named WVIAC Player of the Year, and Charleston's Shari Reed, selected as WVIAC Coach of the Year after leading the Golden Eagles to the regular-season title.
Howard played a major role in leading WLU to a third-place finish in the regular-season. The native of Lee-on-Solent, England went 7-1 in conference play at No. 1 singles with her only loss coming to the undefeated Craig.
Howard teamed with
Raissa Wischi, the 2010 WVIAC Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year, to post a perfect 8-0 record at No. 1 doubles in WVIAC action.
Wischi, a native of Sao Paolo, Brazil, was a first-team All-WVIAC selection for the second consecutive season after an impressive year at No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles.
Emma Windsor, a junior from Oswestry, England, was the Hilltoppers' third first-team All-WVIAC pick. Windsor turned in a strong showing at No. 2 singles this fall and teamed with newcomer
Alex Barr to form a formidable tandem at No. 2 doubles.
