WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's tennis team squared its West Virginia Conference record at 1-1 on Sunday, pulling out a hard-fought 5-4 decision against Shepherd in a match at the Edgar Martin Tennis Complex.
The Hilltoppers (1-3, 1-1) used their strength at the top of the lineup to send the Rams home on the short end of the scoreboard. West Liberty won at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to grab an early lead before putting the Rams away with victories at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles.
Raissa Wischi teamed with Marina Quintana for a 9-7 win at No. 1 doubles and followed that up with a commanding 6-0, 6-1 victory against Brittany Bolster at No. 1 singles.
Quintana, the 2009 WVIAC Player of the Year, gritted out a marathon win at No. 2 singles, outlasting Brittany Moreland by a 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 count.
Emma Windsor breezed to victory at No. 3 singles with a 6-2, 6-1 decision against Christina Hammond after combining with Ali Prather for an 8-4 triumph at No. 2 doubles.
West Liberty returns to action Sept. 30 when the Hilltoppers host Seton Hill in a 6 p.m. match.
