MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Liberty University baseball team ran into a hot Frostburg State squad on Friday, falling in both games of a Mountain East Conference doubleheader by scores of 5-1 and 11-0 at Mylan Park.
The Hilltoppers (9-14, 8-4 MEC) will look to bounce back quickly as the two teams are scheduled to meet again on Saturday.
Game 1: Frostburg State 5, West Liberty 1
Frostburg State struck early with a pair of solo home runs in the opening inning and added three more runs in the third to build a 5-0 advantage.
Despite the early deficit, West Liberty starter John Thompson settled in and delivered a strong outing, going the distance with six innings while allowing five runs on seven hits with five strikeouts.
The Hilltoppers threatened throughout the game, collecting seven hits, but were unable to string together timely offense. Giacomo Dolce drove in West Liberty's lone run in the seventh inning with an RBI single, scoring Logan Cypher.
Dolce, Luke Marsh, Hunter White, Evan Tice, Luke Foley, Aaron Flowers, and Lucas Marsh each recorded a hit in the contest.
Game 2: Frostburg State 11, West Liberty 0
Frostburg broke the game open with a four-run third inning and added five more in the fourth to take control early in game two.
West Liberty was limited to just two hits in the nightcap, with Giacomo Dolce and Brodee Latocha accounting for the Hilltoppers' offense.
Colby Conn (1-3) took the loss on the mound, working into the fourth inning. Wyatt McClintock and Charles Thomas provided relief out of the bullpen.
