West Liberty, W.Va. - The West Liberty University acrobatics & tumbling team returns to the road Friday evening, traveling to face Kutztown University and Frostburg State University in a Mountain East Conference tri-meet set for 6 p.m.
West Liberty enters the weekend at 2-2 overall and 2-1 in MEC competition after delivering one of its strongest performances of the season in a 226.355–198.085 victory over Wheeling inside the ASRC.
The Hilltoppers dominated the first half against Wheeling, posting a 33.40 in Compulsory and outscoring the Cardinals in all four heats. A 9.850 in the Pyramid Heat highlighted the early surge, while steady performances in Acro (24.85) and Pyramid (27.00) built an 85.25–71.85 halftime advantage.
West Liberty closed strong with a 44.725 in Tumbling and a 74.48 in the Team Event to seal the 28-point win.
That performance marked a season-high 226.355 score and provides momentum heading into Friday's key conference matchup.
Kutztown enters the tri-meet at 0-2, having fallen to No. 6 Fairmont State (266.755–218.055) and Glenville State (253.105–220.155). Despite the record, the Golden Bears have hovered in the 218–220 range in both outings and will look to capitalize on home-floor advantage.
Frostburg State sits at 1-0 after a convincing 245.670–109.075 win at Stevenson. The Bobcats have yet to compete in MEC action this season after a pair of conference meets were postponed, making Friday their first league test of the year.
West Liberty has had competitive battles with both programs in recent seasons.
Against Kutztown, the Hilltoppers have dropped narrow decisions in their last two meetings, including a tight 248.030–245.650 loss last season in West Liberty.
Frostburg State has also proven to be a strong opponent in recent years, with the Bobcats edging the Hilltoppers in their last four matchups.
West Liberty's success will hinge on replicating its consistency in Compulsory and Pyramid while continuing to improve in Tumbling and the Team Event. The Hilltoppers showed balanced scoring across all heats in their last outing, something they'll need again against two programs capable of posting mid-240 scores.
Competition begins at 6 p.m. in Kutztown, Pa.
