FAIRMONT, W.Va. — West Liberty University senior linebacker Samuel Hobbs has been named the Mountain East Conference Defensive Player of the Week after turning in a standout performance in the Hilltoppers' thrilling 41-38 overtime victory at West Virginia State on Saturday.

The MEC announced its weekly football awards Monday. The honors are presented by The Health Plan.

Hobbs, a Philadelphia native, anchored the West Liberty defense with nine total tackles in the road victory while making three tackles for loss. He also recorded a pair of sacks and recovered a fumble to help the Hilltoppers secure their second straight win.

The two sacks were part of a disruptive afternoon for Hobbs, who consistently helped West Liberty slow the Yellow Jackets' offense in key situations.

Hobbs becomes West Liberty's second MEC Defensive Player of the Week this season, joining teammate Neal Luca, who earned the honor on Aug. 31. Dominic Maultsby was also recognized as the conference's Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 28.

The honor gives the Hilltoppers three MEC Defensive Player of the Week selections through the first six weeks of the 2026 season.
