CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The West Liberty University women's wrestling team opened competition Friday at the NWCA National Duals inside the UNI-Dome, squaring off against a pair of nationally ranked opponents in No. 7 Colorado Mesa and No. 18 Gannon.
Championship Round 1: No. 7 Colorado Mesa 37, West Liberty 8
West Liberty faced a deep and experienced Colorado Mesa lineup in the opening round, with the Mavericks using bonus-point victories throughout the lineup to secure a 37-8 decision.
The Hilltoppers picked up two wins in the dual, both coming in the middle weights. Cassia Zammit earned a technical fall at 131 pounds, scoring a 14-3 win over Hania Halverson, while Skyelar Smith followed with a hard-fought 4-3 decision against Delarie Juarez at 138 pounds.
Colorado Mesa countered with multiple technical falls and three pins, pulling away late to clinch the dual.
Consolation Round 1: No. 18 Gannon 32, West Liberty 12
West Liberty responded with an improved showing in the consolation bracket but ultimately fell 32-12 to Gannon.
The Hilltoppers opened strong as Sydney Chambers collected a forfeit at 103 pounds, and Jeulenea Khang added a highlight victory at 110 with a pin at the 4:18 mark against Angelina Hargate.
Gannon answered with bonus-point wins across the lineup, including three technical falls and a pin, to secure the dual victory.
West Liberty will continue action at the NWCA National Duals on Saturday morning, taking on Fort Hays State at 9 a.m. inside the UNI-Dome.
