Hilltoppers Post Strong Day One at Indiana Tech Warrior Open

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The West Liberty University women's wrestling team opened competition Friday at the Indiana Tech Warrior Open with a strong showing, highlighted by two runner-up finishes, multiple consolation runs, and several bonus-point victories across the lineup.

Leading the way for the Hilltoppers were Cassia Zammit (131) and Skyelar Smith (138), who each advanced to the championship finals in their respective weight classes. Zammit was dominant throughout the day, recording two falls and a semifinal decision to secure her spot in the finals, while Smith put together an impressive run with a fall and three decision victories on her path to the title bout.

At 117 pounds, Trinity Howard turned in another solid performance, she will finish no lower than sixth and will wrestle Saturday for a shot at third. Mariah Mills (124) will finish no lower than sixth and will wrestle Saturday for a shot at third

West Liberty showcased depth in the middle and upper weights, with Makyah Newlun (160) stringing together an impressive consolation run that included two quick pins and a technical fall she will finish no lower than sixth and will wrestle Saturday for a shot at third. Grace O'Korn (145) rebounded with a tech fall and a decision in the consolation bracket, she will finish no lower than sixth and will wrestle Saturday for a shot at third.

Additional point scorers included Janiya Brogan (180) she will also finish no lower than sixth and will wrestle Saturday for a shot at third along with Jamie Shapton (207), who also will finish no lower than sixth and will wrestle Saturday for a shot at third.  Bailey Emery (131) picked up a fall during consolation action. Sydney Chambers (103) opened her tournament with a victory in the championship bracket, and Sienna Van Balen (124) recorded two early wins, including a pin, before continuing to compete in hard-luck matches.

West Liberty will return to the mats Saturday for Day Two of the Warrior Open, with Zammit and Smith competing for individual titles and the Hilltoppers looking to add to their team total.
