West Liberty, W.Va. - The West Liberty University women's wrestling team will be back in action this weekend, traveling to Fort Wayne, Ind., to compete in the Indiana Tech Warrior Open on Friday and Saturday.
Hosted by Indiana Tech, the two-day tournament will feature a deep and diverse field with more than 35 teams represented, giving the Hilltoppers an opportunity to test themselves against programs from across the Midwest and beyond.
West Liberty will be among a competitive lineup that includes Adrian, Alma, Avila, Baker, Baldwin Wallace, Bethany, Brewton Parker, Eastern Oregon, Georgetown, Grand Valley State WC, Heidelberg, Hiram, John Carroll, Joliet Junior College, Lourdes, Maine Maritime Academy, Manchester, Michigan Revolution, Midway, Mount Union, Otterbein, Point Park, Providence, Rio Grande, Rochester Christian, Siena Heights, Southeastern CC, Southern Illinois Regional Training Center, Tiffin, Trine, UCLA, the University of Michigan WC and host Indiana Tech, along with several unattached competitors.
West Liberty heads into the weekend with momentum after earning a 22–19 road victory at Frostburg State on Friday night in the first-ever meeting between the two programs. The Hilltoppers secured the win behind key bonus-point performances and strong decision victories throughout the lineup.
Sydney Chambers opened the dual with a forfeit at 103 pounds, and Trinity Howard provided an early spark at 117 with a dominant 15–0 technical fall in just 1:08. Cassia Zammit delivered one of the decisive moments of the night at 131 pounds, pinning her opponent at 1:41 to swing the team score in West Liberty's favor. In the upper weights, Makyah Newlun (160) and Janiya Brogan (180) sealed the victory with hard-earned decision wins, allowing the Hilltoppers to withstand a late Frostburg State push.
